Standing Stronger
The University of the Philippines Academic League of Chemical Engineering Students is known widely in the university for its age. For fifteen young, fruitful years, UP ALCHEMES has become an organization worthy of recognition for its soaring excellence. Alchemists have become fortified crystals that build solid ground in terms of standards, academics, and genuineness, all for something greater than themselves — others.
In the past year alone, UP ALCHEMES finished with 100,0 passing rates in the November 2013 and April 2014 Chemical Engineer Licensure Examinations. Ending the academic year with glory, Alchemists were recognized in the 2014 College of Engineering Recognition Rites as honor students and special recognition awardees, including the recognition of the only summa cum laude in Chemical Engineering, Alexander John Cruz.
More than academic proficiencies, UP ALCHEMES’ events have been bigger than ever. Alchemists have successfully conducted a wide array of reviews in the university through the Reviews and Tutorials; an assistance event to high school students through the College Entrance Exam Review Series; and four nationwide events: ChEckBoard for graduate ChE students, Research Fair for high school researchers, Chemical Engineering Students Summit Philippines for fellow ChE undergaduates, and the award-winning service umbrella, ChEer UP Pinoy for the whole community. With these events, UP ALCHEMES gained the Engineering Organization Excellence Awards First Runner-up title and was awarded the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers-Junior Chapter Luzon’s Best Chapter Organization.
All of these events serve to continue in the pursuit of excellence and service. This year, the organization started with the UP ALCHEMES alumni endowing one small lecture room in the Chemical Engineering Building, in the hope of crafting future chemical engineers in brilliance. UP ALCHEMES continues with the goal of standing stronger under the crystal foundation that has started as a movement in 1999. Grounded by the core values of service, humility, academics, professionalism and excellence, UP ALCHEMES continues to prosper as one of the youngest and strongest organizations in the college.
