Heman D. Mendoza, BSMetE 1981, MS, Ph.D.

Professor Mendoza’s contribution to small-scale mining communities plays a big role in uplifting the lives of the small mining industry. His DOST ERDT-funded project since 2009 developed the process flow of recovering gold without the use of mercury or cyanide which is applicable to small-scale mining operations. His team, with him as the lead, constructed mineral processing plants in four major small-scale mining communities in the country. Not only did he demonstrate his technical expertise to help the small-scale mining communities, but as educator, he also helped the small-scale miners enhance their capability so that they can be self-sufficient even after the project ended in 2019. Now, the mineral processing plants are being operated and managed by the communities with his support and that of the DOST regional offices. His work with the small-scale miners supports the goal of the government for responsible and sustainable mining. Professor Mendoza has been a technical and research consultant to various organizations, mainly in process development and waste management.
Professor Mendoza is an exceptional academic scholar in the field of mineral processing and environmental engineering. He has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students of Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering and Environmental Engineering
programs since being a faculty of the Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department in 1994. He has the passion to promote excellence and integrity to his students. He was awarded the Most Outstanding
Professor and Most Outstanding Researcher by the UP College of Engineering in 2005 and 2000, respectively. These awards demonstrate his excellence and love in teaching research. Professor Mendoza’s work shows his dedication to improving the minerals industry, exemplifying his lifelong
commitment to serving the Filipino people.
