IE Achievers Program Expanded

The current Board will continue expanding the UPIEAA’s anchor campaign : The IE ACHIEVERS PROGRAM. Kicked off last year, the Achievers Program aims to provide nancial assistance to selected IE undergraduates and faculty. For the students, the assistance will be intended for their non-tuition expenses. A cash grant of PHP 5,000 is to be provided on a monthly basis for the 10 school months of a school year.

To date, 3 students and 2 faculty members have received the monthly grants. For the coming school year, UPIEAA will welcome 3 more students who will be included in the program. As in the previous grants, a Screening Committee (composed of current Board Members) will ensure that the stringent and fair selection process will be consistently adhered to. The objective is to select only the most deserving into the program, with their Socialized Tuition System(STS) rating and academic performance as the key criteria.

The UPIEAA would like to express its sincerest gratitude and appreciation to all the UPIE Alumni who have supported the Achievers Program. There were numerous pledges received during the UPIEAA Homecoming event last October 2016. It was heartening to note that the support of several IE Alumni batches were in the form of “Barkada Pledges” showing continued solidarity and camaraderie among the alumni.

Moving forward through 2018, the Board has decided to solely focus the program on grants for undergraduates. In parallel with generating support from both individual and batch “barkadas,” the Board has embarked on a Corporate Campaign, in partnership with the UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc (UPERDFI), to further generate funding support for the Achievers Program. This would be the first time that the association would be specifically tapping the corporate community to align their education-focused social responsibility initiatives with the UPIEAA.

2018 IEmagineering Symposium To Be Launched

Riding on the success of its first ever symposium last October, the UPIEAA is pleased to announce that it will be conducting IEmagineering 2.0 to be held in the 2nd Quarter of 2018. Continuing its thrust in delivering relevance for nation-building, its theme will be “How To Feed A Hundred Million: IEmagineering Systems For Food Security.”

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” de la Pena has been invited to deliver the Keynote Address. As in the first staging of the symposium/conference, an impressive line- up of speakers will be sharing their expertise and experience to the attendees.

IE Graduates Inducted at Graduation Dinner

The UPIEAA also continued to support the annual UPIE Graduation Dinner which was held last June 22 at the Celebrity Sports Plaza. An important art of the evening’s program was the formal induction of the IE graduates to the UPIEAA by UPIEAA President, Ricky Banaag.

UPAE Recognizes Dr. Josef Yap as a Professional Degree Awardee

In cooperation and coordination with the UP Alumni Engineers, the UPIEAA took the lead in the selection of the 2016 IE Professional Degree Awardee. An Awards Committee, composed of current board members and alumni, was formed for the screening, deliberation and subsequent nomination process. Dr. Josef Yap(IE ‘80) was given the distinguished award for 2016, given at the UPAE Alumni Homecoming event held last November 12, 2016. From 2005 to his retirement in 2013, Dr. Josef “Jop” Yap was President and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). As President, Dr. Yap set the Institute’s 5- year research agenda and ensured that research reports met the Institute’s standards before dissemination to the general public.

Dr. Yap was also Regional Coordinator of East Asian Development Network (EADN) and is currently a Professorial Lecturer at the UP School of Economics and the Lead Economist for the Second Compact, a project under the auspices of the Millennium Challenge Corporation of the US Government. Jop was named as one of the 100 Outstanding Alumni of the UP Diliman College of Engineering as part of College’s 2010 Centennial celebration.

IE Club to Celebrate Its 50th Anniversary

To foster camaraderie among IE undergraduates, UPIEAA is assuming active participation in the celebration of the IE Club’s 50th founding anniversary — “Aurum: The UP IE Club 50th Anniversary Homecoming.” This ambitious event aims to gather over 300 attendees (undergraduates and alumni) on November 25, 2017 at Palacio de Maynila to reminisce 50 years worth of Clubber stories and legacies.

Strengthening its Social Media Presence

Two of the major objectives of the current Board is to continually broaden the reach of the association among the UPIE alumni and increase participation to its programs and activities by strengthening its social media presence. Besides improvements to its existing website, the UPIEAA will be increasing its presence in Facebook and other popular social media networks.
