UP Alumni Achievers: Albert Samuela

Engr. Albert A. Samuela demonstrated adaptability and learning agility as a Chemical Engineer, and he has subsequently specialized in an important field that is intimately related to a societal issue – water scarcity. He ascended to the position of marketing leader in the Asia-Pacific division of Ecolab, deploying various innovations to segments of the industrial sector and guiding the company to growth trajectories. He also holds a Black Belt Certification after completing multiple projects and implementing the Lean Six Sigma methodology within the same organization.

Engr. Samuela is also the Co-Leader of the Water Footprint Reduction Cluster of the Water Alliance, a private sector organization in the Philippines that is administered by the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP). He oversaw the expansion of Water Demand Management (WDM) training and implementation into the industrial sector. Engineer Samuela was also appointed by USAID-Safe Water as a Resource Person and Trainer on Water Demand Management (WDM), and he has trained National Water Resources Board (NWRB) policymakers on the same topic. He is also the founder of the “Rescue Water PH” movement, founded in 2021 with the help of twenty volunteers. They have already trained between 500 and 600 individuals in water demand and water management, the majority of whom are from Batangas province.

He has served the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) in various capacities for many years. He served the organization as Vice President for Luzon of PIChE in 2012-2013, National Executive Vice President of PIChE in 2013-2014, and President of PIChE Laguna in 2015-2016. In addition, he is the President of PIChE Batangas for the years 2021 and 2022. In addition, he participated and was a plenary speaker in multiple PIChE National Conventions.

He was the 2017 recipient of the Ecolab Marketing Excellence Award, an award presented annually to selected Ecolab employees worldwide who have contributed at the highest levels and achieved results through extraordinary teamwork. Engr. Samuela was recognized for his innovation leadership and transformational leadership in Southeast Asia’s industrial water industry. During the 2014 fiscal year, he also served as President of the EcoClub, Ecolab’s employee engagement group in the Philippines. During his term, he led a program to rebuild classrooms, improve water supply, and build handwashing and sanitation stations at Candahug Elementary School in Palo, Leyte, which was severely damaged by Typhoon Yolanda.

The College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology Alumni Association, Inc. and the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, UPLB presented him with the 2015 Distinguished Chemical Engineering Young Alumnus and the 2022 DChE Oustanding Alumni Award-Industry Category, respectively. He received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Philippines Los Baños in 2004.
