UP Alumni Achievers: John Mark Napao

Engr. John Mark Napao is the Lead Specialist for Transmission Line and Substation Projects at the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines and the President and Founder of Solar Hope, a non-profit organization that provides solar and sustainable solutions to marginalized communities in the Philippines. Β To date, they have reached 32 communities, adopted 10 communities and lighted 2,275 homes.

Engr. John Mark Napao is the Lead Specialist for Transmission Line and Substation Projects at the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines and the President and Founder of Solar Hope, a non-profit organization that provides solar and sustainable solutions to marginalized communities in the Philippines.  To date, they have reached 32 communities, adopted 10 communities and lighted 2,275 homes.

Solar Hope is a multi-awarded organization, having received the Best Innovator on Social Innovation Challenge in 2020 by iVolunteerPH and receiving an honorable mention in the Land Category for the 2020 East-West Center Earth Optimism Awards: Southeast Asia. It was also part of New Energy Nexus Philippines’s 1st Cohort Incubation Program, “Enabling Communities via Energy Innovation.”

Engr. Napao is also a co-author of numerous research presented at conferences and published in scholarly journals. Most notably, his research on Stochastic Analysis on the Effect of Fault Impedance and  Fault Type to the Area of Vulnerability, which was presented in the 2015 IEEE PES Asia-Pacific  Power and Energy Engineering Conference (APPEEC), in Brisbane, Australia as well as on Break-even distance analysis of residential solar  photovoltaic system and line extension for off-grid electrification  methodology in the Philippines, which has been presented in the 2017 IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering and 2017 IEEE Industrial and  Commercial Power Systems Europe (EEEIC / I&CPS Europe) in Milan,  Italy. He was also the co-author of a research titled Sustainable Outreach and Lifelong Advocacy to Rekindle Hope”, 2018 IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering and 2018 IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Europe (EEEIC / I&CPS Europe), Palermo, Italy, Jun 2018.

Engr. Napao graduated Magna Cum Laude in B.S. Electrical Engineering from the UP College of Engineering and was awarded with the Jose C. Torres Award for Student Excellence in Electrical Engineering.
