Dr. Louis P. Alarcon, is an Associate Professor at the UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute, as well as the laboratory director of the Microelectronics and Microprocessors Laboratory (Microlab).  He spearheaded the creation of the Intel Microprocessor Laboratory (1998) and the ADI Microelectronics Laboratory (2014) in the EEEI. He is active in the research, design, and development of low voltage and low energy integrated circuits, low energy computation, integrated sensor nodes and networks for environmental monitoring, integrated energy harvesting, and asynchronous circuits.

His other research interests include analog and mixed-signal circuits and systems, low-energy computation techniques, and integrated energy harvesting in sensor nodes. He is also the incumbent of the Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) Professorial Chair for Microelectronics. Dr. Alarcon successfully advised more than 30 graduate students, leading to the publication of more than 80 technical papers.

He has led many projects that include being the project leader of the Research Project Resilient Sensory Swarms for Energy and Environmental Monitoring (RESE2NSE) since 2015, and the SmartWire Project in 2016. In 2006-2010, he created and developed the Sense Amplifier-based Pass Transistor Logic (SAPTL) and designed a Low Energy Active RFID and Baseband Processor at the Berkley Wireless Research Center, University of California Berkeley. In 2001-2004, he was the project leader of the VCTI Project: Developing Graduate Education in  Microelectronics (2001-2004), which increased our pool of graduate-level IC  designers, leading to the creation of local IC design companies and activities. 

He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, in 1995 and 2002 respectively, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2010.
