UP Alumni Achievers: Jasper Powell S. Esguerra
Engr. Jasper Esguerra is a Chemical Engineer, Renewable Energy and Innovation Professional, Chartered Financial Analyst, and Project Manager. He pushes the realization of energy projects that move the world to a sustainable global economy by providing engineering, financial, and business development services for landmark renewable energy projects backed by Aboitiz and Ayala.
Since 2014, he’s worked full-time in sustainability-driven private companies after leaving Pilipinas Shell. In 2014-2018, he was the Technology Supervisor for Aseagas Corporation, Aboitiz’s biomass subsidiary, that was designed to produce carbon-neutral bio-LNG and liquid carbon dioxide for industrial uses.
He became the Technical Support Group (TSG) Lead, in charge of the engineering aspect of Aseagas’ business model change from producing biofuel to generating baseload biomass power due to falling oil prices. In Aseagas’ transition from plant construction to operations, he recruited, led, and retained a team of 9 engineers and scientists for plant technical services, including plant process engineering (troubleshooting/KPI tracking), laboratory analysis, integrated management systems, R&D, project execution, and IT. Engr. Esguerra also worked in Aboitiz corporate services, which helped him transition in 2018 to his current job in Corporate Planning & Development at Negros Island Biomass Holdings Inc. Biopower, backed by Ayala’s AC Energy, is developing 3 70 MW biomass powerplants in Negros Occidental. The portfolio is the first standalone facility to generate 100% of its electricity from sugarcane waste and the first industrial facility in the Philippines to use second-generation biomass (agricultural residues).
As the head of Biopower’s Business Development Group, he works with expatriate executives to lead development and R&D, and his team serves as the portfolio’s project management office. Converting coal-fired power plants to biomass, mechanizing and modernizing cane harvesting, distributed biomass applications, torrefaction/pelletization/bioplastic production from agricultural residues, municipal solid waste incineration, biomass fly ash beneficiation, short-rotation woody crop plantations, insect-based protein production, and nature-based carbon sequestration are business concepts.
He is also a part-time lecturer at the University of the Philippines – Diliman Department of Chemical Engineering, he began teaching Introduction to Renewable Energy for Chemical Engineers in 2017.
He obtained his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman and graduated Summa cum laude. Apart from finishing his MSc at the Asian Institute of Management in 2021 at the top of his class, he also earned professional credentials from the Association of Energy Engineers®, Project Management Institute, Global Innovation Management Institute, and CFA Institute, he also earned the Energy Innovation and Emerging Technologies Certificate from the Stanford Center for Professional Development in 2015 and two Graduate Diplomas from the Ateneo Graduate School of Business – Center for Continuity. He completed the Managers Course at UP-ISI in 2015 and the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training Program at AGSB-CCE in 2017.
