UP Alumni Achievers: Boon Kristoffer Lauw

Engr. Boon Kristoffer P. Lauw is a Special Science Teacher and award-winning author at Philippine Science High School Main Campus. He published “Team Abangers and Ang Estilong Trumpo,” which won the Salanga 2020 Prize from the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY). The Salanga Prize is an annual contest for the best children’s stories published in English or Filipino and is a benchmark of achievement for writers in the Philippine children’s literature industry. The PBBY is a private, nonstock, nonprofit organization committed to the development of children’s literature in the Philippines.

Engineer Lauw has also taught, mentored, and coached numerous students in various events. Several of his students participated and won the Tower Design Competition at the 5th Annual Fix and Focus Forum in 2019. He assisted a student team in 2020 for the DOST PCIEERD Young Innovators Program 2020, a research support program of DOST PCIEERD that awards funding to promising young innovators who wish to engage in pioneering works that encourage quality research papers, publications, products, or inventions. Three eighth-grade students he tutored from the Philippine Science High School Main Campus were awarded prototype funding for their research proposal “Shock Electrodialysis Apparatus.”

He also coached teams of eighth- and twelfth-grade students from the Philippine Science High School Main Campus for the fourth and fifth Belt & Road Teenager Maker Camp and Teacher Workshops (in 2020 and 2021), who ultimately won the Best Presentation Award in the Engineering Design category and the Best Maker Award in the Low Carbon and Energy Conservation category, respectively. This event is co-sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. His students also placed at the Impact 2050 – Impact Hackathon 5G conducted at Impact Hub Manila for the categories of Education (Grand Prize in 2021), Agriculture (Grand Prize in 2022), and Sustainable cities (First Runner-up in 2022). In the aforementioned competition, participants complete a series of trainings for the hackathon, culminating in a project proposal pitching session that could have a significant influence on the education sector using 5G.

Other competitions in which he mentored students include the Shell the Bright Ideas Challenge in 2021, a live pitching session for shortlisted proposals from the Shell Nxplorers Program in which participating teams pitch their proposals that could help solve the world’s food, water, and energy challenges, and the 6th Machine Design Summit in 2022, in which teams were tasked with creating an innovative device from household materials. In both events, Engr. Lauw’s students placed as 2nd Runner Up in both competitions. The Worldwide Creative Thinking Olympiad (ICTO) 2022 was an online international competition for creative thinking held by the Organizing Center for STEM Olympiad (OCSO) for STEM growth around the world. Five of the teams he guided were awarded Gold, three were awarded Silver, and four were awarded Bronze.

Before pursuing a career in teaching and writing, he worked as a Geocycle – Technical Officer for Holcim Philippines, Inc. and as a Brewing Supervisor for San Miguel Brewery, Inc. Engr. Lauw received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the UP Diliman in 2013.
